IAM Chair's Message I

IAM Chair's M essage

Welcome to the third edition of the IAM Newsletter. This has been designed to provide you with news and views from individuals and institutions involved in the Irish Academy of Management as well as useful information on forthcoming conferences.

In this issue we bring you information on our conference for 2004 which will be hosted by the School of Business, Trinity College Dublin and which will provide an historic setting for the conference venue. The conference will take place on 2 nd and 3 rd of September 2004 and will extend over two full days. This is in response to the increased number of papers that we have received over the last few years and also in our desire to provide a wider range of activities and presentations during the conference.

Inside the newsletter we bring you a report on this year's conference that was hosted by the Smurfit Graduate School of Business. If you have items that you would like to include in the next edition of the newsletter, please let me know.

Irish Academy of Management Conference 2003

The Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College

Dublin was host to the annual IAM conference for 2003.

The conference, held on the 2 nd and 3 rd of September, had as its theme,

Management Theories and Practices in the 21 st Century: Time for

Reflection? This provided the opportunity to consider whether

management fads and fashions prevent us from focusing on the

principles and foundations of social theory or offer a real possibility

of new insights and opportunities for understanding.

One track in all of the sessions on the first day of the Conference was

dedicated to the issue of contemporary issues in management thought.

Aside from the conference, sessions related primarily to the theme,

there were seven parallel tracks running throughout the two days.

Included in were two sessions in the public policy arena from the Irish

and International perspectives.

Symposia covering areas in Marketing, Human Resource Management,

Management, Organisational Behaviour and Management Information

Systems took place. As a new venture this year there was also a session

track dedicated solely to an industry focus on the Irish food sector.

The inaugural lecture was on the issue of Facing the New Management

Education and Research Agenda , with Professor Anthony G. Hopwood

the Peter Moores Dean, Said Business School Oxford, delivering it.

IAM Annual Conference 2003

The Annual Conference of IAM will take place this year at the Smurfit School of Business, University College Dublin on the 2nd and 3rd of September 2003. The conference theme is:

Management Theories and Practices in the 21st Century: Time for Reflection?

The conference theme provides the opportunity to consider whether management fads and fashions prevent us from focusing on the principles and foundations of social theory or whether they offer the real possibility of new insights and opportunities for understanding.

What are the new theories and practices? Have we as researchers been so seduced by the promises of new trends and ideas that we have lost touch with the cornerstones of our discipline areas? Should we consider more fully the contribution that theory may have to understanding practice? Are the new theories simply cleverly repackaged, 'old wine in new bottles,' or ground breaking additions to our understanding of management?

Those interested in joining the debate on this issue are encouraged to present a paper at the conference. Papers are welcome from the broad range of management disciplines - new and old - including Accounting, Finance, HRM, Marketing, Industrial Relations, Organisation Behaviour, Operations Management, Strategy, International Business MIS/BIS, e-business, Public Policy/Government, etc.

A 500 word abstract should be submitted to the conference con-ordinator, Kevin Lavin (kevinlavin@iamireland.com) by 28 February 2003. This year we are providing participants with the opportunity to submit their abstracts via the web and details will be available soon at iamireland.com/conference.html. If you are interested in organising a special session, for example a round table discussion or symposium, please contact the conference chair, Sean de Burca (sean.deburca@ucd.ie )

Getting the Benefit from E-Business

A DIT project has recently received significant funding to develop a greater understanding of the processes by which SMEs make the transition from the old to the new economy using ICT. The TRAMs project (Transition Research & Analysis Model) will involve the analysis of data to examine the effect of e-business implementation on business process models. The study provides four basic strands of critical inquiry: customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, and human resource management. John Jameson (Lecturer in Marketing, DIT) is leading the project.

DIT TERS Research Award

The team of Jim Urquhart (Head of Graduate Business School, DIT), Thomas Cooney and Katrina Lawlor have combined to win a research award from DIT. The research aims to identify areas of convergence and divergence in entrepreneurship across different business environments so as to enable the development of entrepreneurial behaviour in any type of organisation. Additionally, this research will extend the traditional concept of entrepreneurship being primarily concerned with the creation of a new venture and the development of new models will have an impact in the entrepreneurship literature generally.

E.U. Leonardo Award - ENTREVA Research Project

The objective of the research is to conduct a state-of-art literature survey of the methods, tools and measurement systems used in the evaluation of vocational enterprise – covering entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship and enterprising behaviour models - education and training in the partner countries and to gather the results for analysis. The survey aims at detecting the applicability of the evaluation methods to measuring the short- and long-term effects of enterprise education on the accruement of the human, social and financial capital of the learners. Six countries are taking part and Thomas Cooney (Lecturer in Entrepreneurship, DIT) is leading the Irish research.
