Chair's Message
Welcome to the IAM newsletter.
Thanks to Prof. Kathy Monks and to Eoin Bassett for doing the usual and providing a fine issue.
I am sure you will join with me in wishing Prof. Roy Green well in his new post in Macquarie.
He will be missed, especially by me given that I have taken over the role of Chair from him!
Having been on the Council for quite a few years it is indeed an honour.
Fresh elections for the Council will take place late next year for a three-year term.
We are all looking forward to UCC 2006 and to seeing you all there.
The conferences for 2007 and 2008 will be in Queens and Tallaght respectively.
Dr. Jim Quinn of TCD has joined the Council and Dr. Alma McCarthy of NUI, Galway has taken on the newly created role of membership officer for the Academy.
The Irish Journal of Management has a new editor and team (more of that in this issue) and we wish them well in further adding to the journal. We pay tribute to the outgoing boards.
The IAM is affiliated to the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management (IFSAM), and was invited to the European Academy of Management (EURAM) which is now chaired by Prof. Peter McKiernan who sends his warmest wishes to the Irish Academy.
The Irish representation on the EURAM Council is Dr. Jim Quinn of TCD.
The EURAM conference is in Paris next year and is growing at a fast and furious pace and I would encourage you all to become part of it.
Finally, IAM hosted (in DCU) a delegation of Danish Business leaders (Danish Centre for Leadership) on the request of the Danish Embassy in June.
Forward and onward to UCC.
Dr. Thomas O'Toole,
Chair, Irish Academy of Management. |

DIT launches new 'Institute for Minority Entrepreneurship'
Senator David Norris was the guest speaker at the recent launch of the 'Institute for Minority Entrepreneurship', a new initiative by DIT. This institute is the first of its kind in Ireland and through its work it seeks to offer all of the peoples of Ireland the opportunity to maximize their economic and social potential through entrepreneurship education and training.
'Minority Entrepreneurship' has been broadly defined by the Institute to be inclusive of those communities who are generally regarded as being outside of mainstream Irish society in terms of entrepreneurship and so the following groups are considered by the Institute to be 'minority entrepreneurship groups': ethnic, 'grey', disabled, travellers, gay, female, gaeltacht, and home-based entrepreneurs.
The primary objective of the Institute is to bring significant benefit to its target audiences by researching the needs of these minority entrepreneurship groups, developing appropriate training programmes and materials, and delivering these programmes in the most effective manner possible for each individual group.
The Director of the Institute is Dr Thomas Cooney and he can be contacted at thomas.cooney@dit.ie or by phoning 01-4027075. Further details of the institute can be found at www.ime.ie .
Students from DIT crowned 'College Entrepreneurs of the Year 2006'
Sponsors Enterprise Ireland, Ulster Bank and Invest NI are delighted to announce that students from DIT were awarded the prestigious top prize at the 2006 Student Enterprise Awards, Ireland's biggest third level business awards, at a ceremony in Queen's University, Belfast.
Students Aisling Conroy, Jennifer Kent, Audrey Maher, Siobhan Groark and Honora Egan of team 'Eirmed' from DIT beat off stiff competition from hundreds of third level students across Ireland with their business proposal 'EasyPeezy', a nappy that enables a mid-flow urine sample to be collected, scooping the coveted €10,000 top prize and title of 'College Entrepreneurs of The Year'.
Now in its 23rd year, the Student Enterprise Awards - which were designed to foster and promote innovation and entrepreneurship amongst third level students across the Island of Ireland - had a celebrity entrepreneurial expert on the judging panel in the form of American entrepreneur Doug Richard, star of the hit BBC show, Dragons Den.
'Blackhawk' wins DIT Student Enterprise Competition
The Grand Final of the 12th annual DIT Student Enterprise Competition recently took place in DIT Aungier Street, with four teams pitching their business plans to the adjudicating panel in front of a capacity audience. The top prize went to BlackHawk, presented by 3rd year Marketing students Rory Fox and Mark Noonan, for their plan to manufacture and market a new saddle specially designed for professional horse riders. The winning team was tutored by Dr. Tom Cooney.
The Student Enterprise Competition is an initiative of the Bolton Trust - an organisation set up by staff members of DIT to promote entrepreneurship - and is now co-sponsored by the Trust, DIT and the Dublin-based technology risk management company, Steorn. There was an original entry of 56 business plans and following quarter-final and semi-final stages, four finalists competed for a first prize of EUR5000, second prize of EUR2000, and a joint third prize of EUR1000 each.

MBA 'Management Case Study' book project
The MBA Association of Ireland www.mbaassociation.com is embarking on 'Management Case Study' book project, on which the Association and senior executives from within its 2,100 membership, in 1,200 companies, will work in partnership with business researchers and academics from business schools throughout Ireland.
The last decade of unprecedented growth in the Irish economy has led to a breadth of experience in managing success and sustainability. However, there has been little time to reflect and learn from these successes, and failures. The purpose of the book is to compile an accessible collection of Irish business case studies, a portfolio that captures some of these practical business stories and underscores the key lessons to be learnt from recent developments within Irish management practice. The book will draw from a number of fields within management practice and will span all of the themes that are dealt with in MBAAI chapter areas i.e. Innovation, Entrepreneurship, World Class Performance, Competition and Leadership . The scope will include public and private sector organisations and the focus will capture the operating environment, competitive positioning and challenges and business strategies of several Irish companies and Irish resident FDIs, each noted for achievement in areas such as R&D, ICT, Services, Innovation, Enterprise, Competitiveness, Internationalisation, etc.
Work on the book will start shortly and the collection is scheduled for publication in late 2007. It is envisaged that there will be strong demand for the publication from teaching staff and postgraduate business students in domestic business schools, also from academics and business students in overseas business schools who are interested in analyzing the challenges and strategies of companies operating in a 'tiger' economy.
The proposal for this case study collection initiative is being co-ordinated by Dr. James Cunningham, JE Cairnes Graduate School of Business and Public Policy, NUI Galway and Dr. Denis Harrington, School of Business, Waterford Institute of Technology.

Academy of International Business (UK Chapter) 34th Annual Conference King's College London, University of London April 13th -14th 2007 Corporate Governance and International Business
[www.kcl.ac.uk/management/aib2007/]
Call for Papers
The theme of the conference - corporate governance and international business - acknowledges the increasing influence that corporate governance theory is having upon research in a wide variety of disciplines. In a broad sense, corporate governance is about how firms should be governed so that they are run effectively and efficiently. Much of the existing literature has focused on large publicly-listed companies and upon the potential conflicts of interest between managers and shareholders, and between different groups of shareholders, and has suggested that mechanisms to mediate these conflicts may have a marked impact upon corporate performance. But (different) governance issues also arise in SMEs, family-owned firms and other forms of business organisation. As yet, there has been little work on how corporate governance factors impact upon firms' strategic decisions, such as the decisions about whether, when, where and how to internationalise, and upon how firms organise and manage their activities across national boundaries. Furthermore, given that corporate governance systems vary across countries, it is likely that these impacts will depend both upon the nationality of the parent company and upon the host country.
As always, theoretical and empirical papers are invited on the whole range of international business issues. Contributions focusing on the following issues would be particularly welcome.
- The effects of corporate governance factors on the internationalisation process.
- The effects of changes in (foreign) ownership on strategic decisions and corporate performance.
- Comparative studies of corporate governance systems.
- Foreign ownership and corporate governance reform.
- Finance strategies and foreign direct investment.
- The management of financial risk exposure by MNEs.
- The governance of global commodity chains.
- Outsourcing and offshoring strategies and implications.
- Cross-border mergers and acquisitions.
- Entry into emerging and transitional markets.
- The international expansion of firms from emerging markets.
- Network strategies
- Human resource management within MNEs.
- SMEs, entrepreneurship and innovation.
- E-commerce and international business.
- Social and environmental issues, non-governmental agencies and public policy.
Proposals for specialist panel sessions are also welcomed. One is already planned on corporate governance in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) economies.
Doctoral Colloquium

The purpose of the colloquium is to provide doctoral researchers with the opportunity to present and discuss their research with a panel of distinguished scholars in interactive sessions that are open to all conference delegates.
