Annual Conference: Queen's University Belfast |
The IAM Annual Conference will be held at
Queen's University Belfast from 3rd to the 5th September, 2007. The conference
theme of IAM 2007 is:
"Connecting Theory & Practice"
The unprecedented pace of globalisation alongside the development and
rapid diffusion of communication technologies have generated a rapidly
changing environment in which organisations operate. Technologies are
blurring the demarcation between functional areas of the organisation
and integration and networking both intra- and inter-organisationally,
now characterise management practice.
These factors raise important issues for the study of the practice of
management. In particular, where management practice is constantly evolving
then to what extent are classical perspectives of management still accurate
and useful? To what extent do management practitioners seek to discover
management theory and subsequently test and apply it within their organisation?
Alternatively, do managers perceive theory and practice as comprising
irrevocable differences? Are managers justified in perceiving the academic
study of business and management as abstract and irrelevant to their organisation?
For academics working in the areas of business and management, how appropriate
are the conceptual frameworks on which we undertake research? Do we strive
to contribute to the academic literature in a way which provides insight
to current thinking and in a manner which is appropriate for organisations?
To what extent is academic research improving our understanding of management
in the 21st Century? Do we distil the lessons for management emerging
from our research and seek to communicate these effectively to practitioners?
In 2007, the 10th Annual Conference of the Irish Academy of Management
will focus on the complex relationship between management theory and practice.
Contributions are welcome from both academics and practitioners on research
that is designed to test, extend or develop management theory while making
a clear contribution to management practice.
We look forward to welcoming you to Belfast in September 2007 to examine
the challenges facing management academics and practitioners alike.

| Welcome
to Northern Ireland & Belfast |
Northern Ireland has an amazing variety of landscapes, cultural
attractions and leisure opportunities as well as an intriguing - and famously
complex - history.
Although compact in size, this endlessly intriguing region has an astonishing
variety of scenery, cultural attractions and leisure opportunities contained
within an area comparable in size to Yorkshire or Connecticut.
Within 90 miles of the Queen's campus, you can climb a wild mountain,
plunge into Atlantic surf, explore ancient lakeland islands and enjoy
a pint and a sandwich in a village pub. All in the same day, if you are
really determined!
The smallness of Northern Ireland has distinct advantages. For the price
of a student ticket, you can take a bus and arrive at almost any destination
in a couple of hours. On your journey, in whichever direction you choose,
you are sure to encounter evidence of the rich diversity of the historical
and social heritage that continues to shape the destiny of this complex
little country.
Belfast has been described as "Europe's friendliest - and
trendiest - regional capital." The Times of London has also named
the city as one of its top 12 world travel destinations, while leading
youth lifestyle magazines have described Belfast as "sexy",
"buzzing with life" and "one of today's most fashionable
places to visit and live in." Such high praise is no longer unexpected
in a city that is effectively casting off its old troubled image and whose
citizens are proud to show off its fresh face to the world. "Its
people are the most honest, cheerful, friendly and well-mannered in the
British Isles," enthused a Daily Telegraph. columnist. We are sure
that you will agree with this accolade as you visit Belfast!
Travelling to and from Northern Ireland is much easier and more economical
than you may imagine.
Most major British cities are within an hour's flying time from Belfast's
two splendid airports. Budget airlines fly frequently to London and other
destinations at student-friendly fares. Ferries from Larne and Belfast
connect with ports in Scotland and England and Ulsterbus operates cross-Channel
express coach services. The Enterprise train service takes about two hours
to Dublin.
And, using our integrated rail/bus transport system for internal journeys,
you are sure to enjoy experiences that will enrich your memories of life
here forever.

| Queen's
University Belfast |
Queen's University Belfast has a record
of academic achievement which stretches back more than 150 years.
Founded by Queen Victoria, the Queen's University in Ireland, was designed
to be a non-denominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which
was controlled by the Anglican Church.
The University was made up of three Queen's Colleges - in Cork, Galway
and Belfast. Although it was the first University in the north of Ireland,
Queen's drew on a tradition of learning which goes back to 1810 and the
foundation of the Belfast Academical Institution.
Its collegiate department, which provided University-style education,
closed with the establishment of Queen's and four of its professors and
many of its students transferred to the new college.
Founded in 1845, Queen's opened in1849 when the first students entered
the magnificent new college building designed and built by Charles Lanyon.
Since then, the University estate has grown to more than 300 buildings
- many of them listed for their architectural importance. The first batch
of students numbered 90. Today there are some 24,000.
The University is situated in a tree lined Victorian suburb renowned for
its restaurants, bars, theatres and fine architecture. It is one mile
from the City centre, is convenient to both the City and International
Airports and is well served by public transport.
Its unique blend of the historic and the modern offers an ideal venue
for conferences, business meetings, exhibitions and presentations.
The magnificent Lanyon Building, lends a spectacular backdrop to any event.
At the heart of the campus, where the conference facilities are concentrated,
our traditional quadrangle provides a haven where delegates can relax
during conference breaks while still enjoying the bustle and vibrancy
of a modern working university.
Our facilities are excellent and include;
- A wide selection of meeting rooms, many of which are located in the
quadrangle in the Peter Froggatt Centre, ranging from small seminars
to large lecture theatres (capacity 300). The foyer is perfect for registration,
small exhibitions and refreshments.
- The beautiful Whitla Hall, seating 1250, for plenary sessions, large
exhibitions, fashion shows, concerts etc.
- Charming reception rooms and boardrooms.
- High class range of catering services to suit all requirements including
Bistro style, self- service or full waitress service. For the Grande
Finale -what could be grander than a Banquet in the Great Hall? The
menu range, wine list and high standard of service are second to none.
- The Queen's Physical Education Centre, situated in the Botanic Gardens,
which offers a wide range of sports facilities.
- The Queen's Visitors' Centre which hosts exhibitions as well as selling
University memorabilia.
- Over 1000 bedrooms in the Queen's Elms Halls of Residence situated
in pleasant parkland in a quiet residential area close to the main campus.
